# Return value

The return value is the value that the Formula Editor returns as the result of a function or [operation](/acron-9.3/en/intro/operator.md).

The [data type](/acron-9.3/en/intro/datentypen.md) of a return value depends on the specific function and the value type of the [arguments](/acron-9.3/en/intro/funktionen/argumente.md) of the function or the operator.

You can only use the return value of a function or operation as an argument for a further function or as an operand if that function or operator expects the same data type as argument or operand.

If the return value does not match the required data type, you must use one of the functions for converting between two data types.
